The TOLES Advanced Examination aims at candidates who ideally have already had some experience of authentic legal English documents in their workplace.

We recommend that candidates should be at least at the FCE (B2+), advanced (C1) or proficiency (C2) level of general English to enroll on a course in our LEC training centre.

The TOLES Advanced specifically requires knowledge of the vocabulary and correct use of collocations in more than 10 areas of law (it will not include any criminal terminology). The TOLES Advanced examination requires little or no knowledge of English law or American law.

The examination consists of only one paper: Reading, Writing and Redrafting to be completed in 120 minutes.

The examination tests candidates’ practical skills in the following:

-redrafting a passage from “legalese” into modern, plain English,
-understanding, analysing contractual provisions and explaining them to a non lawyer,
-rewriting an inadequately written letter in a professional, up -to -date manner,
-using legal collocations properly,
-using correct prepositional phrases in a legal context.

There is no fail mark, but six colour grade bands, each specifying a candidate’s level of legal English competence.
The preparation course takes thirty 90 minute sessions held once a week.

The registration deadline is 4 weeks before the date of the exam and upon payment of the registration fee in our LEC office.

The examination fee in 2021 is 760 PLN.

The TOLES HIGHER examination is aimed at learners who have already acquired the basics of legal terminology and would wish to go on to the more advanced points.
The examination has a strong focus upon the language of written contracts and accurate letter writing in that it is based on consultations with law firms as to candidates’ true needs in the workplace.
We recommend that candidates should be at the upper-intermediate (B2/ B2+) level of general English or higher to enroll on a course in our LEC training centre.

The exam consists of two parts:

• Paper 1 Reading and Writing (90 minutes)

It tests candidates’ knowledge of legal terms used in around 10 areas of law (the range of topics is wider than at the Foundation level), the vocabulary of written contracts, collocations frequent in all areas of legal communication, as well as the familiarity with the formal register of legal writing.

• Paper 2 Listening (30 minutes)

This part focuses on listening for gist, comprehension and specific vocabulary.

The preparation course takes thirty 90 minute sessions held once a week.

The TOLES FOUNDATION examination is a newly created level available since November 2007. This level is aimed at students at all levels of general English, who have had very little or no knowledge of legal terminology. Its major goal is to ensure that they have the basic, essential foundation of legal terms to build upon in future.

However, intermediate and upper-intermediate (B1/B2) are the recommended levels at which students can enroll on courses provided in LEC.
The exam consists of only one part Reading and Writing, divided into 10 sections.
The time allowed for the TOLES Foundation examination is 90 minutes.

Candidates are challenged to recognise their own common mistakes, to complete reading comprehension exercises, to complete open cloze tasks, to define contractual phrases, as well as are being required to identify accurate prepositions and collocations within a legal context.

The preparation course takes thirty 90 minute sessions held once a week.
The registration deadline is 4 weeks before the date of the exam and upon payment of the registration fee in our LEC office.
