How to prepare for the new ONLINE TOLES Foundation exam

From January 2022
Before you start any preparation, make sure you know the format of the exam:

  • the number of exercises
  • what you are expected to do in each
  • the time allowed.

Candidates may also find it useful to check the areas of law that they are tested on during the exam. These are all provided on the Boost your Legal English platform.

  • The exam consists of one written Part.
  • The time allowed is the same: 90 minutes.
  • The maximum score is 100 points.
  • There are 10 Sections to complete

Section 1, Section 2, Section 3, Section 4, Section 5, Section 6, Section 7, Section 8, Section 9, Section 10

SECTION 1

There are five groups of words, 4 in each. In each group you need to find one word that is not related to the main topic.
This Section tests your wide knowledge of legal vocabulary from a variety of topics.

The Legal English Boost platform offers exercises called Collocations where you learn a selection of phrases from each legal topic.

SECTION 2

There are five sentences with one mistake in each. Your task is to find an incorrect word or unnecessary word.
The mistakes can be connected with the grammar of the phrase (countable v uncountable nouns, singular v plural nouns), the spelling or the tense of the sentence.

For this Section you need to memorise the legal collocations as found on the Legal English Boost platform.

SECTION 3

There are six pairs of sentences. In each pair you need to decide which preposition is the correct one.

SECTION 4

There is a short text describing a real-life case. After reading it you need to decide where 5 statements given are True or False.

To understand the text properly, the Legal English Boost platform offers exercises called Collocations where they are grouped in different legal topics.

SECTION 5

There are the notes from the conversation summarizing the case. There are 10 gaps in the text. You need to choose the correct word or phrase from a list of 4 given.

For this Section you also need to know your grammar well. The missing parts may be legal collocations, linking words or business phrases. However, all the legal collocations necessary can be found on the Legal English Boost platform.

SECTION 6

There are 12 phrases in the list and three areas of law. Your task is to put the phrases in the correct group.
In this Section your extensive knowledge of legal phrases matters most.

SECTION 7

There are 15 sentences with one word gap in each. You need to complete the sentences with one word provided from the list.

Your knowledge of the correct legal phrases is tested in this Section. The Legal English Boost platform offers exercises called Collocations where you learn all the needed phrases for the exam.

SECTION 8

There is a contractual provision with 12 phrases underlined. You need to match the word from the text with the correct definition given in the list.
This Section checks your understanding of legal contractual phrases.

SECTION 9

This is a standard open cloze exercise. There are 10 gaps in a text where you can only provide one word in each space. The first letter of a word is already provided. The text may describe real-life cases or concepts from a variety of legal areas. The missing word mostly forms part of a legal phrase.
There are no points awarded for incorrectly spelled or incomplete words. There are two points for each correct answer.

SECTION 10

There is a newspaper article describing a real-life case and 10 questions following it. For each question you need to choose the answer from 10 answers already provided. In the previous version of the TOLES Exam candidates needed to write the answers themselves.
To be successful in this Section, you need to know the legal collocations used to describe different cases.
